Foundation Scholarships

Bracy V. Cornett Memorial
The Bracy V. Cornett Memorial Scholarship was created by Martha A. Taggart ('43) in 1997. Martha Taggart chose to honor Bracy V. Cornett because of the extraordinary assistance she offered Miss Taggart as she pursued a bachelor's degree from Truman State University, then known as Northeast Missouri State Teachers College. This fund is building to endowment.

Hearst Fine Arts - Art
The Hearst Scholarships were established in 1986 through a grant in the amount of $15,000 from the William Randolph Hearst Foundation. The initial grant was the first in a series of gifts made by the Hearst Foundation.

Juanita McGuire Jamison Memorial Art
This scholarship was endowed by the estate of Juanita McGuire Jamison ('13) in 1974. Jamison taught art and music in public schools for 10 years before becoming a private instructor of the pipe organ.

Bob and Brenda Jones Visual Communications
This scholarship was endowed by Bob and Brenda Jones in 2006. Bob Jones taught in the Visual Communications program at Truman from 1979-1996. In 1996, Bob became the Division Head of Fine Arts and then the dean of Fine Arts in 2005.

  • If all things are equal, priority will be given to the applicant demonstrating financial need



Jean Kraus Memorial
This scholarship was established in 1970 by the family of Jean Mason Kraus ('65) who died in VietNam in 1970. Kraus was a painter and taught art in the public school system in Clark County and in Germany before being inducted into the service.

George and Stacy McGuire
This scholarship was established in 1963 as a gift from the estate of Ivie A. MacCarthy. Given as a memorial to her parents, George and Stacy McGuire, this scholarship benefits art and philosophy majors.

William R. Murray Art
This scholarship is awarded annually to an art history or studio art major.

George S. Preisack Jr. Memorial
This memorial to George S. Preisack Jr. was established by family and friends in 1987. Preisack's daughter, Lynne, and son, Jeff, graduated from Truman in 1984 and 1988, respectively.

  • Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA
  • Upper one-third of high school class
  • Chemistry, English or fine arts major



Aileen Hall Shoaff and Regina Davison
The Aileen Hall Shoaff and Regina Davison Memorial Scholarship was established by Dr. Susan Shoaff-Ballanger and Mr. Jay Ballanger in honor of Susan's mother, Aileen Hall Shoaff and Jay's grandmother, Regina Davison.
  • Sophomores, juniors or seniors who have been art majors for at least one year prior to application or, in the case of rising sophomores, since they entered Truman
  • Art: Studio Art or pre-MAE BA major
  • At least one recommendation from faculty of the Truman Art department
  • Renewable for students who continue to make satisfactory academic progress



Paul Talley and Matt Johnson Memorial
This scholarship was established in 2004 as a tribute to the contributions of Paul Talley and Matt Johnson to the field of photography. Talley, 44, and Johnson, 25, were among 13 people killed aboard a commuter plane crash on October 19, 2004 near Kirksville. They were part of the Hawkeye Creative Communication team assisting Truman with the creation and design of new University publications and they were scheduled to take photographs on campus.

William & Heddi Unger Art History
This scholarship was established in 1997 through the efforts of colleagues and friends of Professor William Unger to honor his memory and that of his wife, Heddi Unger. William Unger (1914-1980) touched the lives of numerous art students, colleagues, and friends through his unique qualities as a teacher and artist. He joined the faculty at Truman in 1960. After more than twenty years of teaching in Europe and America, he retired from Truman State University as professor emeritus of art in 1979. In that year, he was awarded the Cross of Honor for Science and Art by the President of the Republic of Austria and was appointed Artist-in-Residence at Truman.

William Unger Memorial
The year 1980 marked the founding of this award, initiated by family and friends of Dr. Unger upon his death. Dr. Unger came to the United States after World War II and eventually to Truman as professor of art in 1960. He was granted the title of professor emeritus of art in 1979.
